This is what it took before anyone trusted me to care for a child on my own.
Cellular biology, genetics, organic chemistry, anatomy, microbiology, physics. The foundation everything else gets built on.
Philosophy of medicine, pediatric ethics, research ethics, end-of-life decisions, cultural competency. Most physicians learn medicine. I also studied the ethics of it.
Two years in lecture halls and labs on anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and pathology. Then two years of clinical rotations across every major specialty, in real hospitals, with real patients.
General inpatient pediatrics, NICU, PICU, pediatric emergency medicine, subspecialty rotations, overnight call. Sixty to eighty hours a week, managing children through emergencies where getting it wrong was not an option.
Five years and counting on the front lines of inpatient medicine, handling the cases that were too complex, too acute, or too uncertain for outpatient care. Leading resuscitations, coordinating specialists, teaching residents.
More than clinical training
Most physicians learn medicine. I also learned the ethics of it.
My Master of Arts in Bioethics is not a credential on the wall. It is a lens I bring to every clinical decision. When you are facing a hard choice about your child, you are not just getting a recommendation from me. You are getting a physician trained to weigh competing values, sit with complicated family situations, and ask not only what can be done, but why it is the right thing to do.
